Washburn is the county seat of McLean County. It is located approximately 38 miles north of Bismarck and approximately 70 miles south of Minot on US highway 83.
Washburn is situated on the Missouri River and is home to Fort Mandan, where the Lewis and Clark expedition wintered. There is also the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.
