  • One simply cannot miss the Arc De Triomphe. The climb to the top is not too exhausting and the view is definetly worth it. There is a museum and gift shop at the top before you go outside to the roof. The fee was nominal and there was no real line to speak of. This is a good way to see a lot of Paris, especially the Champs Elysees!

  • Many of us have dreamed of seeing Paris and no trip there would feel complete without seeting the iconic Eiffel Tower. It is so much bigger when you see it in person. Completed in 1889 by Gustav Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower was built for the Universal Exhibition in celebration of the French Revolution. The height, including the top of the flagpole, is 324 meters. The Tower can be seen all over the city.

There is a light show at night right on the hour and lasts for 5-10 minutes. Don't miss seeing the Eiffer Tower at night! But to get to the top, be sure to get an early start as the lines for the elevators and the steps are quite long!

  • While Notre Dame is not the largest church in the world, it certainly is one of the most elegant. The rose windows and flying buttresses are quite interesting to say the least. You can tour the church itself or can climb all the way to the top and gain an incredible view. You can almost heat a voice yelling "Esmerelda!".

We actually visited the church several times on our trip to France. Do not miss this hallmark of Paris history. Construction of the cathedral began on 1163 and was completed in 1345.

  • In 1670, Louis the 14th had the Les Invalides built. It is a military hospital that took care of wounded soldiers. With its large church topped by a golden dome, Les Invalides is an excellent example of French classical architecture.

The ashes of the greatest French military ruler, Napoléon, rest under the dome of the Invalides. Don't miss the Place des Invalides which is on the other side of the courtyard. The gardens and the elegant bridge over the Seine are gorgeous!

The cafeteria at Les Invalides has very good food and I would recommend stopping there for lunch.

  • Designed by the architect Abadie, the Sacre Coeur's first stone was laid in 1875. However, it was not completed until 1914 and was consecrated in 1914 after the end of the first world war. The basilica is in the Romano-Byzantine style.

One can walk the steps to get to the Sacre Coeur, or take the funicular as well. The area around the basilica is called Montmartre and it boasts of wonderful cafes and shops. Many artists still paint in this area today. See my Montmartre tips for further information.

  • If you are looking for narrow streets, cafes, french musicians, mimes and artists, then come here to Montmartre! Its quaint elegance will charm your heart. There are also shops here as well. Very close to Montmarte, you will find the famous Moulin Rouge which I have covered in the next tip.

Still an amazing video. You make me want to be there with the two of you again. So nicely done. And Edith Piaf...Mon petite sparrow, je t'aime.

Mark, Thanks for the great tips, some of them saved. Yes, I have a horror story about getting a cab in Paris too! Looks like things have not improved. ~ Helen

Soooo, you're the Mark Larry talks about :-) I enjoyed your Paris tips. So true about the taxi situation. It's easier to ask the hotel to book you a shuttle and it's MUCH cheaper.

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Paris. Was it on your way to the EuroMeet 2008 in Karlsruhe?
