This is actually the place where I am living. Ladenburg is situtated about 10 miles north of Heidelberg.
It dates back to 50 A.C, where Romans build a fort and founded the city under the name of Lopodunum. Around 600 A.C it became the residence of the bishop of Worms. Carl Benz (inventor of the motor car) lived here until his death, this is why the oldest garage of the world is located in Ladenburg.
Although this is a very ancient place with a roman museum. lots of old churches and many other things to see and do, there are only few tourists around.
So if you are looking for a non-tourist but romantic Heidelberg-like place, Ladenburg is a good choice.

Nice to know where you live. I had no idea only 10 miles from Heidelberg!
