Living in North Las Vegas

The Big Move

After living in Southern Florida my entire life, I decided to move out here with my partner Trace in February of 2004. My parents had moved here the previous fall and had a couple of rental homes open so I figured that it would be easier then to move here and live in one of their homes, living close to their primary house of course. I was in for a definate shock on arriving here.

Setting In

After shoving every last thing that the two of us could fit into our 2000 Ford Focus 4-Door and driving across this great country, I was at first quite happy to arrive here in Vegas (especially since I had just turned 21 at the time!) After some time though, I found that there were a few dark spots to Las Vegas in general that couldn't be overlooked and won't be changing anytime soon. This town is very, very transient, and many people looking to hit the jackpot or make some quick money soon realize that the casinos were not built on the winners of them, but built off the money from the LOSERS. I have also been taken advantage of here because of the good nature and kindness that I feel should be shown to your neighbors/friends, and have lost money, time, respect, and most of all trust in others here. Makes you learn to be cautious of people at first.

So What's the Good Here?

Although at the surface this looks like some cheap money hoarding hole in the desert, there is actually quite a bit of history here and as more and more people choose Vegas (and of course North Las Vegas as well) to come to live here, there are more and more diverse cultures and now a much broader scope of employment fields that this area offers. The Northern-most area of North Las Vegas is the masterplanned community of Aliante which is still being laid out for home/commercial construction, including a new hotel/casino off the beltway. Another area just south of Aliante called Elderado is an older community (less than 10 years or so) but has kept a good appearance and home values are a testiment.

Pros:"New Areas of Town Provide Nice Neighborhoods, Safe, Cheaper than areas like Summerlin & Green Valley but not Trashy either"
Cons:"Older areas of NLV Must Be Driven Through to Get to Newer Areas in the North (if coming from downtown or the strip) Many Vegas-locals consider NLV to be far and Lower-class"
In A Nutshell:"A Good Place to Move To if You Don't Mind the Local Attitude Toward NLV"
