Heritage

Dalkey's an old settlement that has become one of the most chi chi neighbourhoods in Dublin. There is a reason for this . . . its got a great location a stones throw from the sea, a picturesque main street (very cute at Christmas when the lights are up), tangled old back lanes where beautiful old houses sit in splendour mixed in with the sort of amenities that any self respecting international rockstar/writer/celeb would require (art galleries, upmarket food stores, restuarants, bars, cafes, etc etc) But mixed in with all this and the reason I'll always have a soft spot for it is the old Dalkey of tiny working class cottages, community halls, a thriving local credit union and all the other amenities any large Irish village might want. Its a real mix of the real and the plastic. And all this in a very small area with lovely walks around it.

The problem is that the mix is going to be increasingly difficult to maintain. Old Dalkeyites are slowly but surely losing out to the new money and as they go they'll take some of its character as a village (a place apart from the anonymous suburbs which have engulfed it) with them.
