Kayakoy - Saturday 10th September 2005

Kayakoy is situated near enough right next to Oludeniz, where we stayed during our trip to Turkey, but as they are seperated by large hills and the like, a journey to nearby Fethiye and then up a long hill is the only way that I'm aware of in order to enter Kayakoy.

If you do visit Kayakoy; sun cream, sunglasses and most of all decent footwear are an absolute must. I made the mistake of wearing sandals on the day with nothing else to wear on my feet, and so therefore I had to walk across long gaps and slippery rocks, getting more and more stroppier the further away we got from a flat pathway. Due to being quite high up by the time you reach the Kayakoy church, there is little shade and therefore you spend a lot of time exposed to the sun, so sunglasses are recommended, and suncream should definitely be considered.

In The Area

As mentioned previously, Kayakoy is situated very close to Fethiye and Oludeniz, but due to being quite high up a hill, the only way in and out is via some sort of motorised vehicle. However, right next to the ghost town itself is a hotel with a restaurant and swimming pool, and next to that is a minature cafe selling cold drinks and the like. If you take an excursion to Kayakoy, you'll likely end up eating a kebab lunch at this hotel, however you don't need to worry if you are a vegetarian, they do a few alternatives.

If I remember correctly, there is a little area for children if they get bored, but when I went, my brother and neice, then five and seven respectively, seemed to enjoy discovering all sorts of interesting things dotted around the ghost village. However, if you do take children with you, remember more than ever about decent footwear because if they can't run about discovering Kayakoy, they will most likely spend the day bored out of their minds.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:A unique place with many things to do.
  • Cons:Quite difficult to reach and can be boring if it's not your thing.
  • In a nutshell:Certainly the perfect place if you're bored of bars and clubs.
