Husum is (was) a typical sea-town; the kind of town old shanties are about.
It was first mentioned in 1252 as Husembro (Bridge by the Houses).
A big flood in the year 1363 created a channel to the ocean (North Sea) and soon Husum developed into an important harbor.
It is the birthplace of one of Germany's famous writers - Theodor Storm,
a poet and novelist (1817--1888) whose craft of fiction grew out of his lyric verse.
'. . . the town, the marsh, the uplands, the dyke . . . the sea, the tidal flats . . . '
Husum has retained it's "Character" - a castle, statue in the old town center, old red or white brick houses with thatched or red tiled roofs, harbor.
Having moved away from Husum to Bavaria at a young age, most of my summer vacations however were spent in and
around Husum and I've traveled there many times since. I dearly love it. It just has "Character".
