"A LITTLE ABOUT PALENVILLE" Palenville by moiraistyx

Palenville Travel Guide: 3 reviews and 4 photos

Palenville is known as the “Village of Falling Waters”. This is due to Kaaterskill Falls. It is named after Jonathan Palen who owned tannery near the entrance to Kaaterskill Clove. Palenville was once known as Lower Clove Village due to it’s location at the mouth of Kaaterskill Clove. Palenvile became developed due to the building of tanneries and the purchase of large tracts of hemlock timber whose bark was needed to tan hides.

An Indian trail once ran from the valley through the Clove. The Kaaterskill, a mountain stream, ran along this trail known for its high ledges. The stream traveled swiftly to the valley among large boulders, through deep cut canyons and between laurel and fern-covered banks. The Indian trail developed was turned into a turnpike in 1823, which route 23A now follows.

Artists still travel to Palenville to paint, draw, and sketch its beautiful landscape. Today Palenville is a picturesque little village separated into two parts by the Kaaterskill Creek.

Nice photo of the falls. We went there in summer '04 There is also a trail that goes from a road from above the top, but the rocks block much of the view.
