"Little Town Lost" Gardiner by moiraistyx
Gardiner Travel Guide: 12 reviews and 23 photos
This may look like the typical small town at the base of a mountain ridge, but it is not. Gardiner is loaded with loads of outdoorsy things to do. For those of you who like a little excitement in your lives you can head off to Skydive the Ranch. Tourists come from all over New York to partake in this thrill seeking hobby. Even if you don't jump, its nice to watch them come down. I've lived here for a total of 7 years on and off and haven't seen one fall yet. This is a good thing. In the middle of the village is an entrance to the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. You can hike, bike, run or ride horse on this trail. It runs from Shawangunk to Rosendale. From start to finish its about 15 miles one way. I've riden this on my bike start to finish and back again and its a gorgeous trail. I took a friend with me and we stopped in Rosendale at the Green Grocer, an all natural organic food shop. We had grilled vegetables with tofu and some other absolutely delicious dishes ended with a fresh fruit salad. Yummy. Gardiner is also home to the Tuthilltown Grist Mill, the oldest continuously operating grist mill in New York state. On Saturday mornings they host a story hour for the little ones.
If you have some time while your here, you can venture out of town about 15 minutes up into the Minnewaska Mountains. There you can find loads of trails, the Mohonk Mountain House, Minnewaska State Park and the Mohonk Preserve. Just over the mountain in Kerhonkson is the Pine Grove Dude Ranch. This is a great place for singles and families. They even have child care available so you parents can get away by yourselves. If you go to Minnewaska State Park there's a small beach. Be prepared for cold water though. For those of you who hike, I suggest the trail that runs along the falls. We used to cliff jump up by high falls as teens, I probably wouldn't do it now, but it was fun then. Low falls is not for those of you with weak stomachs. In the summer time it becomes a sunning spot for a small group of nudists.
You can also find the small town of New Paltz just north on route 32. New Paltz is a college town so be prepared for lots of hippy chicks, tie dye, and bars. There's a club there, Joe's, that's been there for decades. Its mostly for the younger crowd though. New Paltz has a wide range of places to eat. I would recommend Yanni's, a Greek eatery. On Friday evenings they have a musician who plays classical Greek instruments and music. It's nice. While in New Paltz, I would highly suggest taking a Belly Dance class at The Living Seed yoga studio. Once you try it, you'll become an addict.
- Pros:Robert Deniro has a summer home here.
- Cons:I've never seen him.
