Twin room (shared facilities) - Bergamo

Twin room (shared facilities)

Centrale Apartement: Good budget option Centrale Apartement Review
Show Prices

Now known as Casa Vacanze Centrale, we stayed in his budget option for our trip in March 2012.

Conveniently located just 4/5 blocks off Via Papa Giovanni XXIII, this converted apartment-cum-B&B offers freedom for those wishing to have a good location with the use of a kitchen to keep the stay cheaper.

The B&B was clearly once an apartment which has been converted into one twin room with en suite facilities with a further twin and triple room having use of a shared shower room. All three rooms have use of the kitchen where breakfast items including cereal, milk, yoghurt, bread, tea and coffee can be found (although, I didn't find these to be well replenished during our stay).

The triple room benefits from access to the apartment's large balcony - which gives further options to those staying in that particular room.

During our stay we were originally located in the twin room with shared facilities (after being offered the choice of the twin or triple) but after three nights, we were offered (and accepted) transfer to the twin with en suite. Unfortunately, whilst having en suite facilities, it also adjoins the shared shower room which can be disturbing when fellow B&B guests are showering back-to-back at 02:00 and 03:00am (which was our experience for our last two nights)!!!!

Unique Qualities: Your experience here will be very much influenced by your fellow guests. Our first three nights, when we were located in the twin room using shared facilities, were very pleasant and we were not really aware of our fellow guests, apart from our first night when we could vaguely here some voices from the adjoining room (which had en suite facilities).

Unfortunately, our fourth and fifth nights couldn't have been further from that experience; it was clear we had been joined by a group of young adults who, on their first night, sat drinking on the balcony - quite quietly until 02:00am when they decided to retire - each taking a shower in the shared facilities which were adjacent to our room. The following morning they were up at 07:30 making breakfast and having shouted conversations between the shared shower room and the kitchen - quickly rectified by a swift 'talking to'. Our last night had them chain-showering until 03:30!!!

I hope you will experience more considerate fellow guests if you choose this option - or better still, have a large group and take the whole 'apartment' for yourselves!

Address: Via del Casalino 3, Bergamo, 24121, Italy

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: From Via Papa Giovanni XXIII, turn right at Porta Nuova along Via G Camozzi. Via Casalino is 4/5 blocks along on your right, the B&B located just a short distance down. The entrance to the apartment block has a small sign indicating it's presence.

Gombit Hotel: Luxury in Citta Alta GombitHotel Review
Show Prices

This review is based on a visit to the hotel in December 2011 as part of our preparation for EurMeet in 2012 and not based on an actual stay at the hotel.

Whilst wandering the streets of Citta Alta, we stumbled upon this hotel which is conveniently located just off Via Gombit, one of the main thoroughfares in Citta Alta. It holds thirteen rooms spread over four floors of a 13th century tower house but has been thoroughly renovated and modernised.

The receptionist kindly allowed us the opportunity to view one of the double rooms as part of our visit. The room was furnished with a double bed, writing desk and wardrobe. The en suite was luxuriously accommodated and had a walk-in shower, WC, basin and bidets; towels and complimentary toiletries were available, as was a hair dryer. Each of rooms are individual y designed by Gio Pozzi, sharing a common theme of colour and style featuring wooden floors, stone and brickwork.

The hotel has a 24 hour reception, bar and breakfast room with rooms being provided with air conditioning, TV, mini bar and free WiFi.

Unique Qualities: This luxurious hotel is tastefully decorated and had an air of quiet about it.

Address: 6 via Mario Lupo, Bergamo

Comparison: most expensive

Directions: From the upper station of the first funicular, head straight ahead up Via Gombit and turn left into Via Maria Lupo. The hotel is located one or two doors up this side street.

Best Western Premier Cappello d'Oro: Convenience and service! Best Western Premier Cappello d'Oro Review
Show Prices

This 4* hotel is conveniently located on Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII near Largo Porta Nuova within easy walking distance of the train station; the number 1 bus to/from Citta Alta also stops outside the hotel.

During our visit in May 2011, we had sat on the roof terrace and 'abused' the hotel's free WiFi to upload the announcement video and initial pages for EurMeet; the roof terrace is very pleasant and we were undisturbed during our time there.

In May 2011, the hotel receptionist made arrangements for us to view a triple room which we subsequently booked for EurMeet. Our room was at the front of the hotel, directly overlooking Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII and was very pleasant; the only negative comment I have would be the minimal provision of wardrobe space given that we were three ladies sharing the room - this could be easily rectified by providing a tallboy-style robe into the room, which had adequate space to accommodate such a piece of furniture, but this is only a minor point.

The room is provided with a dressing table and work desk, whilst the en-suite has shower, wash hand basin, WC, bidet and is supplied with toiletries, towels and bathrobes.

Room rates include a buffet breakfast which is provided with both continental and hot buffet items from which to select.

Prices quoted below are for advance purchase, non-cancellable rates for a triple room.

Unique Qualities: Pleasant 'roof' terrace located on the first floor within the quadrangle of the hotel which is provided with comfortable outdoor 'lounge' furniture and large parasols to protect from the sunshine during hot weather.

The buffet-style breakfast offers an excellent selection of items to choose from including fresh fruit, yoghurt, pastries, breads, jams and preserves, as well as hot food items. Coffee and hot water is provided, as are tea bags. Breakfast is cleared promptly at 10:00 daily.

Address: 12 Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII, Bergamo

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: Walk straight down Via Papa Giovanni XXIII from the train station. The hotel is on the left just before the old city gates (Largo Porta Nuova).

Botton d'Oro B&B: Budget Option in Alta Botton d'Oro B&B Review
Show Prices

This review is based on a visit to the B&B and not on any actual experience of staying at Botton D'Oro.

Botton D'Oro is comprised of a number of room options which offer sleeping for 2 - 6 adults. Breakfast is self service within a neat breakfast room shared between the rooms.

The entrance is unobtrusive and could easily be missed - look for the small name plaque on the blue doors.

I look forward to an opportunity to return to Bergamo and stay at Botton D'Oro.

Unique Qualities: Botton D'Oro is located in an apartment block within Citta Alta, on the main thoroughfare (Via Colleoni) through the old town.

Albergo Il Sole - Bergamo

Albergo Il Sole

Albergo Il Sole: Citta Alta location Albergo Il Sole Review
Show Prices

This review is based on a visit to the hotel and not on any actual experience of staying at Albergo Il Sole.

During December 2011 we viewed the rooms of this hotel (which also houses a Ristorante Pizzeria) as part of our preparation for EurMeet in 2012. The hotel (and restaurant) is family run and has 10 rooms which have recently been renovated. There is a variety of rooms available including single, double (also available for single occupancy) and triple. Rates range from €65 for single to €110 for triple.

Rooms are accessed via a series of staircases (no lift).

We were shown two triple rooms; the first was simply furnished, including a double bed, a single, wardrobe and a desk with chair as well as telephone, fridge and TV. The en suite facilities was a very spacious bathroom with bath (and over-bath shower), bidet, WC and wash hand basin; towels and hairdryer were provided.

We were then showed another triple room which was very similar. Whilst the third room we viewed was smaller and had an en suite shower room.

Check-in is between 12:00 and 23:00 (14:00 on Thursdays) and small pets are allowed.

The hotel accepts American Express, Visa, Bankamericard, CartaSi, Eurocard and JCB.

Unique Qualities: The hotel has a very traditional feel and is simply decorated and furnished.

Address: 10 Via Rivola, Piazza Vecchia, Bergamo

Comparison: about average

Directions: From the upper station of the Bassa-Alta funicular, go straight ahead along Via Gombita until just after Piazza Vecchiaand Il Sole is in front of you on the right.

Hostel exterior - Bergamo

Central Hostel BG: Great location Central Hostel BG Review
Show Prices

This review is based on a visit to the Hostel in December 2011 and not based on an actual stay there.

Suvanki and I paid a visit to this Citta Bassa centrally located hostel in December 2011 as part of our preparations for EurMeet in 2012. We spoke to the very helpful receptionist (Valentina) on our arrival and she was very happy to take us around the hostel and show us one of their rooms.

From the outside, the bright red building looks distinctly like a hostel but the interior is well-kept, modern and almost of hotel quality.

There is a good variety of rooms including singles, doubles, triples, quads and mixed dorms. Prices range from €25.00 to €75.00 which includes a continental breakfast served from 07:30 to 10:00.

We viewed a quad room (pic 3), pleasantly furnished and spacious which was provided with four single beds (not bunks), towels and bedding included. Each room is also provided with a TV whilst there is also a communal TV room. The room included lockers for storage of personal items and a safe was provided for valuables. En suite was a spotless shower room including WC and bidet.

The hostel has free WiFi throughout as well as an internet room with 2 PCs.

Unique Qualities: I was really surprised when Valentina informed us of the free telephone available. The hostel also has an excellent standard of security with electronic key fob required for entrance outside of reception hours.

A number of areas in the hostel are furnished with seating so that you can relax in a number of locations, either as a group or as an individual.

Twin room with balcony - Bergamo

Twin room with balcony

Mercure Bergamo Palazzo Dolci: Great location Mercure Bergamo Palazzo Dolci Review
Show Prices

This hotel is located on Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII, within an easy 5 minute walk of Bergamo's train station - which is also the terminus for the Number 1 bus from the airport (Orio al Serio).

Checking in at reception on the ground floor, we took the lift to the 2nd floor where our room (204) was located. The room had twin beds (as booked) as well as one easy chair, a dressing table with chair, tea/coffee making facilities, mini-bar fridge, wardrobe (with in-room safe). The hotel has just under 90 rooms, 6 of which are facilitated for reduced mobility users. The en-suite bathroom is provided with toiletries (including soap, shampoo and shower gel) and includes bathroom, over-bath shower, wc, bidet and sink (although it does lack sufficient shelving to accommodate toiletry bags). Towels were provided with extras to be found in the wardrobe.

Our room was one of only a small few which had a balcony, with the room overlooking Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII but we were not disturbed by traffic noise - although, we did find the room rather stuffy and it was impossible to find an adjustment to the air-conditioning which made the room a comfortable temperature so sleep with the door slightly open may well have resulted in traffic disturbance.

Rooms are also provided with free WiFi, although you do need to request a password at reception - where it is also worth mentioning the duration of your stay which should result in receiving a password which can be used for longer than the standard 3 hours which we were issued with for our first two nights (and, of course, are expired the following morning). It's also important to ensure that you receive sufficient password vouchers for all the devices you intend to use in the room as each device requires a separate username and password.

At check-in, you will receive a voucher for each of your night's stay which can be used if you take breakfast within the hotel (at an additional cost of €10 per person). We did not make use of this facility (and therefore cannot comment on it), rather taking the option to enjoy coffee and a pastry at one of the nearby cafes. The hotel does not have a restaurant but does have a bar with small sitting area which is located just off the reception area.

We took advantage by booking this hotel in advance (via www.hotelclub.com) on a non-refundable basis with a twin room for 3 nights costing just over £180.

Unique Qualities: Outside of the bathroom, the room is only provided by one mirror, which is full-length and located on the door into the bathroom. We both found this a little off-putting and added a small degree to a lack of privacy when using the bathroom as you were never quite sure if your partner/room-mate was making use of the mirror.

The hotel is listed as a 4* hotel but lacking restaurant, pool or spa, it's difficult to understand where the rating comes from, having said that, we enjoyed a very pleasant stay and the location is excellent.

Address: Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII, 100, Bergamo, Bergamo Province, 24121, Italy

Comparison: about average

Directions: Head out from Bergamo station towards Citta Alta, straight down Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII and the Mercure Hotel Palazzo Dolci is located on the corner with Via Pietro Paleocapa.

Hotel Santa Caterina - Bergamo

Hotel Santa Caterina

Albergo Santa Caterina: Santa Caterina Hotel Albergo Santa Caterina Review
Show Prices

We arrived at Albergo Santa Caterina rather warm from a long walk through the Citta Bassa from the train station. Albergo Santa Caterina is located in a residential area of Bergamo within reasonable (uphill) walking distance of the Citta Alta.

We stayed for 3 nights in May 2011.

The hotel (Albergo) is located on the ground floor of a double block of flats; it comprises seven colour-named rooms, each containing colour co-ordinated accents and accessories. We stayed in the Blue Room which had an en-suite showeroom provided with soap, shampoo and shower gel. The room has a dressing table and wardroom but did lack the provision of some easy chairs for comfortable seating.

Breakfast is served in a basement room and comprised pastries, yoghurts, bread, salami and cheese. Fresh coffee or tea was made to order.

Next door to the hotel, there is a Sicilian cafe and within easy walking distance a fruit and vegetable shop as well as a laundromat.

Unique Qualities: Although the hotel is advertised on some websites as having twin rooms, it does not have any twin rooms. All rooms in Hotel Santa Caterina are double or family.
