Benxi was founded in 1915 as a metallurgical center. This lead to quick growth; the city now has about 1 million inhabitants. However, as it is still an important base for the steel and coal mine industry, the city is heavily polluted. This is really a shame, because it is located in the southern slopes of the Changbai Shan (Long White Mountains) and it could be a nice city, weren't it for the pollution.
