Many places in the world are marketed as 'paradises'. It's an over-used phrase and a destination should have more than sunshine, sand and palm trees to earn the accolade. In Kiribati, the world's 10th poorest nation and one of the most remote, I found a culture that fits the bill perfectly. Outside of the capital, life is purely subsistence level. People have no money, but they have no worries. Food and drink is plentiful, crime is non-existant and natural hazards are very few. If you want to get far, far away from home and enjoy the simplest pleasures in a landscape of pure tropical beauty, Kiribati is the place for you. |
