Heidelberg - My First Place in Europe When we were going to Argentina for vacation last September 2005, we decided to spend some days in Germany, since we flew with Lufthansa. And we chose to visit Heidelberg, a very quiet place. Except from one old woman who I guess was mad to see to tourists moving around her town...hehehe Heidelberg is located approximately 80KM to the south of Frankfurt and is sometimes described as being at the heart of Europe. Given that European borders are in a constant state of flux this is probably no longer true! It was a bit tiring because I never liked to walk and there we were obliged to walk since every corners and streets of this lovely town is a good scenery. |

| | Philosophenweg The Philosphenweg offers great views of Heidelberg old town from across the River Neckar..... but there's no such thing as a free lunch in this world and I'm afraid you have to walk up either a pretty steep hill or climb up a lot of steps to enjoy the view! There are two ways to get up the Philosophenweg, you can either: One is,walk across the old bridge, away from the old town. Once you've crossed the bridge, turn left and cross the road at the traffic lights. There is a little opening to your left with a sign saying 'Philosophenweg' - go into this opening and follow the stairs up to the Philosophenweg. There are a couple of strategically placed benches on the way up for those in need of a rest! Once you reach the top of the steps turn either left or right, explore and enjoy the view. There are lots of paths into the woods and nature, some of which take you up to the Heiligenberg. Dont worry! All the paths are sign posted. Another way is to walk across the new bridge, away from Bismarckplatz. Turn right at the second crossroads and follow the road upwards. This one is pretty steep at the beginning I'm afraid. You'll actually walk up through one of the most expensive areas in Heidelberg to live - most of these houses have got great views of the old town and castle. You'll also pass a number of University buildings. Eventually the road will turn into a pedestrian only zone. You'll walk past number of viewing galleries and gardens. |
Alte Brücke and Brückentor Alte Brücke which means "old bridge" and Brückentor which is the "Bridge gate" is a very picture worthy and a must visit. And you must have a photo with this very famous Heidelberg monkey! . | | | A must have photo! The famous Heidleberg Monkey |
