Poland, land of my forefathers

Me in my Polish costume

I am very proud to call myself half-Polish, it never used to be that way though, when I was a kid growing up in England. They have all of these laws now, you're not 'allowed' to denigrate someone's race, colour or creed, it certainly hasn't always been like that in England. Growing up in England with a long unpronounceable name gave everyone the right to take the *** when we were kids, I used to feel ashamed of my name and refused to learn the Polish language because I wanted to be 'English'. I used to hate having my name called out at school or in a hospital etc, they could enver say it, I'd go all red and wish that the ground would swallow me up.
I was born and bred in England, so I was English to begin with, but the kids at school were little bastards, obviously learning their xenophobic ways off of their parents. A lot of adults in England are no different, I can still remember being called a 'bloody foreigner' at work in the 1980s, from two old b!tches called Eileen and Marion.
By the time I was 17, I would stand up proudly and pronounce my name to the ignoramuses who couldn't be arsed to ask how to say it properly. I cherish my Polish background and the history of Poland, I am proud of my name, my heritage and knowing that I really come from mainland Europe instead of a poky little island that has long gone to the Dogs.

What a cutie cutie with the most beautiful Polish outfit! I will be visiting Krakow this year, and just loved your stories. My grand kids also love their uncle Sergio. They don't go to DisneyWorld when they visit - they just want Sergio to play with them!
