This warning has been included on several other VT pages but it is worth repeating again. In Amsterdam, the bike is king and has the right of way over pedestrians. The trams and cars seem to have the right of way as well - in fact, I think pedestrians are bottom of the list! So, while you are walking around, always be aware of your surroundings. If you hear a familiar 'dingding' it is likely that you are walking in the bike path and are about to be knocked down. Also be very careful crossing the tram tracks. It can be very dangerous crossing a road that has a bike path, car lane, two tram tracks, car lane and a bike path!

Again another tip that is repeated on many pages here but bears repeating again. Pickpockets are in all the main tourist areas and there are even huge, multi-lingual banners in a couple of streets to warn visitors about them. Still, I saw people walking around with wallets in their back pockets or handbags open while they stopped to take photos. It is not a case that the whole city is rife with pickpockets; if you get away from the main tourist areas, you will find quiet streets that are quite safe.

While walking around the area where our hotel was and in the Dam Square area, we were approached several times by drug dealers. We either said 'no' or just ignored them and they were not a problem. I have heard that if you acknowledge them, they will not leave you alone so it is best just to ignore them.
