When many people think of Oregon, they think of rain. People will tell you it rains constantly there. Actually, in the Portland area and along the coast, it does rain a good bit (but not nearly as much as it does in Ireland!). If you go East of the Cascades, you will find scorching hot summers, cold snowy winters and a lot less rain. I lived in Eastern Oregon for 6 years and it is one of the nicest areas I have lived in. Unfortunately, most people forget about this part of the state as there are very few people who live there. In Wallowa County (NE Oregon), there are more elk than people. If you are headed to Oregon for a holiday, get out to the far reaches of the state. There is some fantastic scenery and virtually no tourists on the Eastern side.
I was born in Oregon so I am a little biased about the place:o) I do think it is one of the most beautiful states in the US. This photo is of the viewpoint looking east along the Columbia River toward Crown Point. That is Washington State on the other side of the river.
This area of the Gorge is well known for waterfalls and beautiful scenery. If you take the old highway (signposted) you can drive around gentle curves up which take you higher and higher and eventually ends up at the Crown Point View Point. There are loads of places to stop and walk or hike back to the different waterfalls. One of them is Oneonta Gorge. The name means 'place of peace'.
I am in the process of adding information on the towns and cities that I have been to. Most of the descriptions will be based on memories since I haven't been to many of these towns in 10 years or more. If I can find any photos of the places mentioned, I will add them, too.
- Pros:Gorgeous scenery in every corner of the state.
- In a nutshell:Beautiful state to explore if you like the outdoors.
