The first time I was in the Vatican was very briefly on a tour of Italy. We were taken to see the chapel and I remember walking very quickly down a long corridor to the Sistine Chapel. The ceiling of the corridor was beautifully painted and there were gorgeous treasures that had been given to the popes over the years but we were limited on time and could not stop to look at them and enjoy them. The above photo is of the ceiling along the corridor on the way to the chapel.

The ceiling in the chapel is, of course, beautiful and it is nice to see it in all it's glory and not just a clip here and there. The bad thing about it is there are so many other tourists there that it is difficult to appreciate it for more than just a tourist attraction.

On another trip, we had an apartment which faced the Vatican and we spent more time there. St Peter's Basilica always fascinates me and I never get tired of walking around in it.

Tom and Mar enjoyed their visit to the Vatican in September 2003, courtesy of the Irish Lotto.
