We have been fortunate in our travels to Paris and have not had any really negative experiences. However, as with all large cities, in the tourist areas you will find pickpockets. Always be aware of yourself and your surroundings and try not to get distracted when in a large crowd. I have heard that it is best to avoid the Metro after 11pm and Pigalle after dark.
