Manhatten side of the Brooklyn Bridge

Hello New York

We visited new York In November 2001 as part of a short City Break .We flew in to Newark from Heathroow on a comfortable Continental Airlines flight at about 6pm.We were met by our shuttle driver who was very knowlegable about New York and gave us a running commentary throughout the journey to our Hotel. We stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel which is situated on East 45 St. Just off Madison Avenue. We met up with our Sister and Brother in Law who had flown in to JFK and were staying in the same hotel. The next day we began to explore the city.We took a subway to the Brooklyn Bridge and this was the first photo I took.

Ellis Island

Next we took the Staten Island ferry to pass the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island .The Monuments were both closed due to the recent tragic events of 9/11.The ferry is free and affords really good views of the Statue and the Manhatten Skyline. When we returned to Battery Park we strolled through Lower Manhatten until we reache Chinatown where we had a really inexpensive but superb buffet meal. From here we returned on the subway to Grand Central Station which was the closest to the hotel .

Just before we entered the Empire State Building

Empire State Building

In the evening we went to the Empire State Building ,contrary to what we thought there was a relatively short queue ,even though security was tight. We should have gone a little bit earlier as it had already begun to get dark by the time we reached the top. However it was really clear and the views were magnificent.Leter that evening the Christmas lights were turned on by the First Lady in Madison Square Gardens .I have never seen so many cops in one place in all my life.
