Letchworth ,now officialy named Letchworth Garden City was the brainchild of Ebenezer Howard who had a vision that would end the poverty and slum conditions suffered by so many in the late Victorian era. Howard dreamed of 'Garden Cities', where the best elements of town and country would be combined and the profits from the town would be used to benefit ordinary townspeople . The First Garden City Limited was formed in 1903 to commence the building of the town. |

| | Letchworth Station The railway line was built in 1850 . As early as 1904 a small halt was constructed consisting of little more than planks .A new temporary wooden station was opened in 1905 . Many thousands came through then to see the Cheap Cottage Exhibition. This was replaced by the present station in 1912. The front of the building is in the Arts and Crafts style but the rest of the station follows a more standard station design.
The station has now been re-named Letchworth Garden City. |
