I teach at Eastern Michigan University, but am originally from Los Angeles. Therefore, it was important to me to live near where i worked for 2 reasons. My lifetime quota for traffic was filled when I left LA, and conserving energy should be a priority. So I live one mile from the school and often ride my bike there. But, though this is nice, it is not well received. No one rides a bike in Ypsilanti, or most of SE Michigan for that matter. Detroit is motor city, and though it is dying a horrible death, it could be saved if people thought beyond the short but glorious past of this part of America.
