Original destination for a weekend break but you know, friends are friends and meeting people is the 1st task I wanna take care about :-)
Nice city, not wonderful but as nice as enough to deserve a visit ...

The official city website is www.stuttgart.de (German only) ... there you can find all what you need to live Stuttgart (very nice interactive map, aka "stadtplan").
The best official for touristic info is www.stuttgart-tourist.de (english & othe rlanguages).
The city zoo & garden Wilhelma is a must !!! More info @ www.wilhelma.de

Koenigstrasse ... no words to describe ... a neverending street fully packed with shops, bars, stores & so on; I can put... more travel advice

I didn't get to see much of Stuttgart on my last visit to this area - will have to spend more time here next time. Great tip on the botanical garden!
You're right about shopping, you only have to pay...So many places to visit on your way, too...
