Feldkirch is in extreme western Austria, in the region of Vorarlberg, on the border with Liechtenstein, and about 45 min by train from Bregenz, 1hr 45min from Zurich and about 6-9hrs from Vienna, depending on the train. I fell in love with it immediately. It has all you could want in a old Austrian town and more. There are still parts of the old city wall, especially the towers, and it has the madatory castle, Schattenberg over looking the city.

The city is very walkable in a hour or two, the tourist office will give you a walking tour to see the points of interest. I found the city to be extremely charming, especially in the winter , when there is a bit of snow on the ground. There were still some Chirstmas decorations up in mid-January when I was there; that just added to the experience.

Schmiedgasse

The Alstadt, old town, is filled with little streets and beautiful buildings with painted on scenes and very well kept. The Rathaus has scenes of people and images important to the history of Feldkirch painted on. You can see a bit of it on the left of this picture.

The River Ill (ill) runs through the city and, while not a roaring river, it just puts a pretty final touch on on of my favorite European cities that I have been to.
