  • Favorite Thing: This book is about Khufu (known by the greek as Cheops). The man who built the Great Pyramid. He was a living God worshipped by his people like all other Pharos of the old kingdom. I knew I had to buy this book as soon as I saw it. We are all fascinated by the Pyramids but we surprisingly know little about the man who built it.

Did you know that there is no image survived for Khufu. There is a little statute (only few inches in hight) but that was proven to be NOT for Khufu. There are plenty of statue found for Khufu but they all had their heads smashed. There are plenty of paintings and statues for his brothers, sisters and children but non for the big guy him self.

This book is great. It tells you most of what history know about the Man who built the Pyramids, his reign and the power struggle after his death.

  • Favorite Thing: This is another great book. What the author does is simply search the current Egyptian fabric in search of Ancient Egyptian customs. I tracts down modern Egyptians every day action and link it to the distant past. This book is a wonderful read for every one who is interested in Egypt.

There are 2 editions on sale one is a paper back and another is a hard cover

General Tips: The Search for Omm Sety By J Cott

  • Favorite Thing: This is a very entertaining book. It is about a true story of Dorothy Eady an English woman who claimed to be a reincarnation of an Egyptian concubine of The Pharo Sety I.

Sety I was the father of Ramsis the Great. Dorothy had this strong belief of her previous life, ever since she was a 4 years old girl living in England. She migrated to Egypt and married to an Egyptian man and had a child which she named Sety. in 1956 during the Sinai war when the british troops invaded Sinai she renounced her british nationality and spend the rest of her life in Abydos which was rebuilt by non other than Sety and his son Ramsis the Great. She claimed that she used to life in the same temple 3000 years ago.

Even if you are like me who don't believe her far fetched story, the book is worth reading and it is very entertaining . You have to admire that she basically acted upon her convections and followed that believe to extreme where imposters and lier would not usually go. Omm sety was a very will know figure and left quite an impression on those people who came to know her.

there are few edition of this book and I am posting this link from Amazon

General Tips: Voice of the Rocks by Robert M. Schoch

  • Favorite Thing: This is the most fascinating book in all of the books that I have read about Egypt. Let me start by saying that The author is NO dummy. He is a professor of Geology at Boston University. So he knows what he is talking about. He studied the Giza Platue during a field trip and Examined The base of the Sphinx and studied the rocks.

He asserts that there are clear evidence that the Sphinx is was built prior to 6000 BC (8000 years ago). He reached to this conclusion by evidence of water erosions due to heavy torrential rain. The last time this kind of rain poured on the Giza Plato was at least 8000 years ago. He stated that his findings were presented in a meeting within the American Geological Society and were very will received.

The current main stream opinion is that the Sphinx was built by Khafre the Builder of the second Pyramid around 2500 BC (4500 years ago)

General Tips: The Search for Nefertiti by Joann Fletcher

  • Favorite Thing: Nefertiti was the wife of the heretic Pharo; Akhanaton. All traces of her disappeared during the reign of her husband. Few scientist Speculate that she disappeared only to emerge as the mysterious Smenkhkara who later ascended to the trown of Egypt with Akhanten and ultimately was his successor.

Dr Fletcher is a very well known Egyptologist. She is an authority in Ancient hairs and wigs. In her book she is trying to figure out what happened to Nefertiti. She believed to have found here tomb and proven the case.

The book lays the ground by discussing the historical fact of the 18th dynasty and the Amarna period. I particularly liked some the valuable resources and information about the Woman Pharo of Egypt. Some of these women ruled during the old kingdom, when a Pharo was not only a king but a walking, living God.

This is a highly recommended book, very interesting and very fascinating.

  • Favorite Thing: This is another fascinating book about a different part of Egypt. The book discusses the History of the Dakhla Oasis and the Western Desert over the last 8000 years. The book goes through evidence of past funa and flora. it also deals with the many civilizations that inhabited the site: Neolithic, pharaonic, Greek, Roman, Christian, and Arab Islamic.

This book is based on the Dakhla Oasis project. The importance of this project stemmed from the fact that the oasis has a unique characterization and was isolated from the wrest of the world by the Sahara desert

This book will change your view of the Great Sahara. a very interesting read. It is fascinating to see petroglyph's of girafs and other animals that live in the sevana not in the desert. The desert 6000-8000 years ago was very green are with plenty of lakes and wild life

  • Favorite Thing: Did you know that the Nile river used to follow from the North to the south millions of years ago??!!!! exactly in the opposite direction of its flow today.

Did you know that the shores of the Mediterranean at times were as south as Al-Fayyom area 100 km to the south of Cairo. Did you know that Nile Delta was located near al Fayyom area also. In that area the famous "whales" where discovered in Wadi Al-hetan. Those "whale" or sea mammals where significant because they were the only sea creatures with legs and feet. These animals pen point the time period that land mammels migrated o the see and evolved later to all these wonderful whales, dolphins and seals.

OK, I agree some times the book get too technical and author thrashes around his Geological jargon that I am no too familiar with but this book is written for some one with NO background in Geology and for the most part it is simple to read. The book also touches on the relationship between geology and Egypt's history. All in all it is a book worth reading if you are planning a long stay in Egypt.
