Al-Shariqah is the official name but locally it is pronounced as Sharjah. The name comes from Arabic stem Sharq which simply means the east or sun rise. Although Sharjah (and the UAE) are located on Eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula, It is believed that the name Al-Shariqah come from a deity that The Arabs of this region used to worship in Pre-Islamic era more than 1500 years ago. That deity was known as Al-Shareq. |
