Kihei is a bit campy, but

Stayed in little condo in Kihei at the most southern part of the town. Almost into Wailea which was good because less foot traffic and a little less crowded than central Kihei. Although Kihei is a little campy, and not really too upscale, the benefit was the variety of the beaches available, with great public access and park amenities (large grass areas, grills, facilities, etc) Our condo was cheaper because was on the eastern side of Kihei road (the main drag) but was no big deal to cross and we had a great ocean view anyway.

Some great local spots to eat

Downtown Kihei had some great little eating spots. Kihei Cafe...big yummy breakfast spot was right accross from surfing spot, outdoor seating. Great dining meals at Cafe O'Lei. There were a few supermarkets for eating in too.

Kids Beaches, Surf Beaches, Pounding Beaches...

We were accross from Keawakapu beach. Great little beach across the Kihei highway, waves were good for kids. In downtwon Kihei there was Kalama Beach Park with nice easy rolling waves, great for learning to surf. Classes are held there all day long, and boards are easy to rent. Super fun for every age....even kids as young as 3- 4years old. We visited "Big Beach" which is further south on the island, about 15 minutes south of Kihei past Wailea. Big Beach is a great big stretch of sand with major shore pound and great for body surfing. Great for adults, a little harry for smaller kids. Definitely would not recommend going there with kids under 10.
