Let me tell you a real life joke about Cologne.
No, first let me give you a little introduction about German mentalities.
So... I would consider myself quite a chatty person, but compared to people from Cologne I am not very communicative. You know, they have the Carnival in Cologne, and they are chatty Westphalians, whereas we Swabians from the South are a bit slower. We do not think more slowly but it takes a moment longer until we say what we think, and when we speak we speak more slowly. Some people do not speak a lot at all, just mumble some significant words, and that's it. They are called "mundfaul" in German, litterally translated: mouth-lazy. Meaning they do not use their mouth a lot for talking.
So, once I arrived in Cologne by train to pick up a Ford car directly from the factory. I took a taxi, and immediately the driver started to chat.
He asked: "Where do you come from?" I answered: "From Ulm." He said: "Ah, one of those hick-towns." (Original: "Auch so ein Kaff...") I said: "I like it." He asked: "What attractions do you have there?" I answered: "For example, the world's highest church spire - three metres higher than the Dome in Cologne."
This ended the conversation. |

| | I have been in Cologne quite often because a lot of important sports events took place there. But it took several years before I knew more than Müngersdorfer Stadion. Last year I went back there with my Kiwi husband who had always wanted to know how the Dome builders could lose the competion against the Ulmers... ;-) As soon as I have time I will add some tips. |
