One day is not enough, but if it is all you can get...... Visiting the capital of Yemen is a wonderful mixture of having one foot in the past and one firmly in the present. The traffic and the clothing shops, the mobile phones all remind you that you are in the present. The architecture, the craftsmen, the peddlers and street vendors, and all the suqs and markets in the old city are as they were a hundred or hundreds of years ago. The architecture is traditional, and the old city is a protected cultural heritage. The city is unspoiled by tourists, and the shops are willing to sell you everything they sell to their local customers without really trying to rip you off any more than they would a fellow countryman. |
| | don't be upset You will find that more than half of the male poulation is wearing a huge jambia, the curved dagger in the belt. This is part of the local dress code, and hardly a concealed weapon. The fact that it is sharp enough to be used as a razor is only a minor detail. |

nettyfitz Sat Dec 23, 2006 18:36 UTC Thank you for letting me see a bit of Aden. My father was buried there 55 years ago in the Airforce cemetery. |
