Aix-en-Provence is a very pleasant university city located in the heart of the Provence region. It makes an excellent day trip if one is visiting nearby Marseilles, Avignon or Arles, but if you are interested in art, particularly Cezanne, then you might want to spend extra time here.

The presence of the Aix-Marseilles university results in an active street life both day and night, with a host of cafes, bars and restaurants that cater to both students and locals. The medieval center of the city is compact and easily traversed in a day. Try to plan your visit with market day, which has stalls of food, flowers, clothing and antiques that spread out througout the entire city center.
