Batu Gajah

An Old Mining Town

Batu is stone and Gajah is elephant. The name was linked to a stone which resembled the shape of an elephant. It was said to be located in the Kinta river, near Kampung Pisang, and now gine most likely due to erosion.

This is the town where the present Sultan was born. I think our local veteran actor, Rahim Razali, also came from this town.

During the colonial time, this was a major town of Perak. This is evident by the District Office for Kinta, which until today is located in this town. This office use to handle the land administration for the district which covers Ipoh the state's capital.

In my life, I've encountered two individuals from outside malaysia who had links with this town. One was wife of the late Paul A. Hilton at his PA Hilton factory in Southampton. Paul was born in this town and was well known as a pilot who survived an air crash during WWII in Europe. He owned the company, PA Hilton (among others they made lab equipment related to fluids, heat transfer and HVAC for universities). The second one was a much younger guy in Australia (rather not name him) during my business trip to Perth in 2002. He was born and grew in this town.
Plnety more to tell.
