The flowering trees shade the cobblestone streets and wooden houses. A bird grabs a twig and flies up into the rafters of a nearby home. A church bell rings and a small crowd files out of the brick building. Courtyard gardens, stone walkways, brick sidewalks…welcome to Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. |
The side streets of Old Town make you feel as though you stepped backward through time. You can sense the ghosts that wander the alleys and make the 250 year old city their home. But, walk towards King Street and your senses are awakened to the modern era. King Street abounds with life and liveliness. Kids in strollers, shoppers with full bags brimming with boutique goodies, coffeehouses packed with folks catching up on conversation. |
Old Town was founded in 1695 and belonged to the British colony of Virginia. Alexandria was home to President George Washington (his Mount Vernon estate is a short drive south), General Robert E. Lee and President Gerald Ford. The city played an important role in the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Alexandria, its Old Town and the surrounding neighborhoods, are chock full of historical significance and plenty to keep you busy. |

Nemorino Thu Jun 25, 2009 22:03 UTC Two cousins of mine grew up in Alexandria, so I used to visit sometimes when I was a child. I remember it was all very historic, but I'm quite hazy on the details after all this time. | Ewingjr98 Mon Apr 13, 2009 02:54 UTC Good start on your Alexandria tips! Must be nice to live near Old Town. |
