Rome 2005

by Lhenne1 - last update: Sep 23, 2006

My first trip to Rome was July-August of 2005. My mom and I went on a tour of Italy for ten days and then spent an extra four days just seeing Rome ourselves.

I suggest that anyone who wants to see Rome take a few days. Doing this place in a couple days will not give you a real sense of how great it is and you'll probably just walk away annoyed at the traffic and masses of people. It's a big city, but there's cool stuff to see down the little side streets and plenty on the outskirts to see and do.
As a teacher, this city was overwhelming to me at first. So much history, literature, art, politics, etc to keep any one person busy for years. I had never been a huge art fan before, but then I had never seen the Sistine Chapel or the Trevi Fountain for myself either.

It was amazing to stand by the Senate, overlooking the Roman Forum, having taught "Julius Caesar" to my class a few months prior. No pictures of the Coliseum can ever do it justice. I didn't know it was possible to mold stone into the sculptures I saw on nearly every street.

I don't think the sense of being overwhelmed ever really wore off in my short time in Rome, and I'm glad it didn't. I've become a spokesperson trying to get everyone I know to visit Rome at some point in their life. Wow.

I totally agree that Rome is an awesome place. I think it is still my favorite European city. Have fun exploring San Francisco!
