Iquitos and Amazon

Iquitos is an adorable jungle city that you can't get to by land. Ride tuk-tuks, buy fresh fruit in town, eat alligator and make your way up or down the amazon into the jungle. You'll be enamoured with the way the jungle surrounds this places -- throngs of birds above at sunrise, bright colors, and the river nearby -- but with enough concrete to make a city girl feel comfortable.

Book an Amazon Lodge trip while you drink. The Muyuna Lodge office is right across the street from a popular restaurant/bar for travelers with lots of good local food. We booked our lodge with caipirinias in hand.

Stay at least a night in the jungle. Pirahna fishing, holding a caiman, wildlife viewing and lots of awesome stuff awaits. The only thing I wish we had done was gone on a canopy walk -- only certain lodges offer this. But we're doing that in Costa Rica this summer, so its all good.
