Spring Break in Budapest

by brwgrl - last update: Mar 30, 2006

Arriving in Budapest

My girlfriend and I spend 8 nights in Budapest in mid-March as our spring break vacation. I had never been to Europe and this was an opportunity to see, according to friends, a very beautiful and historic city.

I loved it - we explored and walked what felt like the entire city over the course of the time we spent there. When we arrived we went directly to our hotel. From the airport we took the Blue bus (#5 I believe) to the Kobanya Kispest station. This took us directly to the Nyugati palyaudvar Metro station which was about 2.5 blocks from the nH Hotel where we were staying. It was quick and easy and not a big deal to do on a Saturday afternoon with no rush hour traffic on the metro.

Our hotel was great - check out the review on my suggestion page. I'd stay there again any time. It was convenient and clean and quiet and nice. Very easy to get to the Tram, Metro and Danube.

Things we did

We did a lot during the week we were in Budapest. We visited the Castle District, several Markets, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Baths, churches, Parliament, parks, restaurants, as well as a variety of shops and so on.

Things I would recommend:
- The Central Market & Lehel Market
- Parliament for the beauty
- Churches on Castle Hill
- WestEnd Mall
- The Szechenyi baths

Look for reviews of each on my page.

What to pack

Febreeze - to counteract the smoke and fried food
Good walking shoes
Day pack - for walking trips

Find a good map of the city - I liked the one we got from the Tourinform office at the airport

Compass if you don't have a good sense of direction
Bathing suit for the baths

Pros:"beautiful city - easy to navigate - much english spoken"
Cons:"heavy greasy food & a lot of smokers"
In A Nutshell:"Reasonable and adventurous spring break!!!"
