April is probably not an ideal time to go canal boating due to the fact that the weather is not the best. We were based out of Vermenton which is a delightful little village and a branch off the main canal du Nivernais. Unfortunately, due to heavy rain in the preceeding weeks, the canals were closed for a few days on our arrival. We soon made up for this once we were able to get on our way. This is an ideal place to bring families and a very relaxing holiday, as you can take your time and go at your own pace.
Wine-tasting is probably the most popular activity in the Burgundy region and it is no wonder why. Burgundy includes the regions of Champagne, Chablis and Pinot Noir. The rolling countryside is absolutely covered in vineyards as far as the eye can see and the opportunities for tasting are plentiful. Definately recommended are Pommery in Reims, Marche du Vins in Beaune (see tips for more info) and various caves in Chablis.
Another appealing feature of the Burgundy area are the villages. There are many small and interesting villages alongside the canal which are easy to visit and within walking distance from your boat. Slightly more out of reach (easy with a car) is Vezelay. This is a charming medieval hilltown with an amazing Basillica and a lovely park overlooking villages in the valley below. Another beautiful place is Noyer-sur Serene.
From the small part of the canal du Nivernais we travelled on, Cravant and Chatel-Censior arevillages that are well worth taking the time to explore. There are also numerous other small villages along the way that are fun to explore if you have the time.
- Pros:Spectacular wine region, relaxing atmosphere.
- Cons:As usual in France, everything closed from 1200 till 1400.
- In a nutshell:A place for the wine connaisseur and the explorer.
