We went to Puri around Diwali time in 2012. It doesnot have an airport of its own, but it is well connected to Bhumbaneshwar through road and rail. Frequent local buses and taxis are available for this route.
We traveled to Puri from Bhumbaneshwar by road. The distance is approximately 57 - 60 kms, and takes upto an hour to reach.
Jaganath Puri, is a holy place of worship for Hindus. It is a part of the origianl 'Char Dham' pilgrimages (which includes Dwarka, Badrinath, Rameshwaram, and Puri).
'Puri' in Sanskrit means 'town'; therefore it means 'the holy land of Lord Jaganath'. It is the only temple in India where Lord Jaganath, Balbhadra, and goddess Subadhra are worshiped together in one shrine. It is famous for its annual Rath Yatra.
The town of Puri can be virtually divided into two main parts. The original town which settled around the Jaganath temple, and the parts of town which developed later, in four directions around the temple.
The Temple Road, is the main road which links the town to the Temple. It is on this road that the combination and mingling of different worlds can be seen where the locals have set up stalls and shops to attract tourists, which are apparently the major source of their income.
At the first glance Puri strikes as any other ordinary town of Orissa: poor and dirty. Poverty can be seen in many other cities and towns of India, but here in Orissa, and especially Puri one gets face to face with poverty.
Yet, there is something here that distinguishes it from the other places, and I soon realized that it was faith.
I have come to realize from my two visits to Puri, one of which was as a child, that it is faith only which holds the town of Puri even in such extreme conditions.
- Pros:The 'energy' and 'faith' which is worth experiencing once.
- Cons:None as I see it.
- In a nutshell:Untiring and unwavering faith.
