Climb the tower (320 steps) for stunning views of Freiburg!!! The construction of the cathedral began around 1200. Back then the cathedral in Basel, built in Romanesque style, served as a model. In 1220 plans were revised and the Freiburg cathedral was instead being modeled after the Gothic cathedral in Strasbourg, France. The West Tower, which has been described as "the most beautiful tower of Christianity", was completed in 1330. However, the city council was unsatisfied with the overall appearance of the cathedral and ordered the Romanesque East Towers and the chancel to be rebuilt into Gothic style. The reconstruction of the towers was finished in 1360, but the chancel was not completed until 1513, due to bad city finances. Throughout the centuries, the cathedral has been almost constantly under construction or renovation. For the last century, the major problem has been air pollution, and in the 18th and 17th century the cathedral was severely damaged during wars. Fortunately, when Freiburg in November 1944 was bombed by the Allied Forces, only parts of the cathedral were hit and the West tower remained standing.
