I lived and studied in Freiburg for four months (in 1999) and I absolutely loved it! I visit Freiburg as often as I can. It's a quite small town (ca 200,000 inhabitants) but still it has so much to offer; a long and rich history, charming old buildings, a big variety of cafes and restaurants, plenty of stores, and enough of bars and clubs. The town itself is very picturesque, and beautifully located next to the impressive Black Forest. One thing that definitely has great influence upon the nice atmosphere in this town is its people; the very friendly and easy going locals and the many students. The University of Freiburg (Albert Ludwigs Universität) is very popular among students, both German as well as international students. Apart from being an old university with a good reputation, the students also appreciate that the university has not been restricted to a big campus far outside of town, but that many faculties actually are housed in buildings spread out all over the city centre. Hence, the student life is well integrated to the city life itself, giving Freiburg a lively character.
Another advantage of Freiburg is the location; in the very heart of Europe, close to both France and Switzerland. I've also read somewhere that Freiburg is the warmest city in Germany...
Visit Freiburg - you won't regret it!!! As a matter of fact, I think you'll have the desire to go back, and if you want to be certain about your return: jump in to the "Bächele", the small stream that floats through the streets of Freiburg's Old Town. According to a legend, visitors who step into this stream have not visited Freiburg for the last time... Beware though, another legend tells that falling into the Bächele will imply getting married to a person from Freiburg! Well, that's a risk you'll have to take... I suppose :-)
Want to know what happened to me and what made me return so many times??? Well, once I accidentally drove into it with my bicycle...and now I'm engaged to a guy and his dad comes from....yes, you guessed it - Freiburg! :-)
