Raiaitea is a very pretty island -i liked this one a lot.
it is quite a large island, and shares its beautifull lagoon with sister island tahaa, inside the same coral reef !
this island has no real beaches(no sand) only a small man made beach .
but also has a fair amount of surrounding motus (little islets ) that have excellent secluded beaches , and can be reached by boat .
the lagoon here is certanly great for snorkeling, diving, kayaking etc !
Raitea is quite a sacred island- with human sacrifice places/temples that were used a long time ago !
when walking around raiatea in a restarant etc and genrally in french polynesia you can see a lot of transvestites or transexuals ,it is believed that this has stemmed from the days of human sacrifice ,as it was often the males who were sacrificed therfore they dressed and turned themselves into women !!
my favourite things do do on this island was to hike up the large hill ,takes about an hour (well for me)but guess it depends on how fast you walk !make sure to take plenty of water ! but the views from the top are well worth the effort ! you can see tahaa and even bora bora in the distance !
the restarants are also excellent here, near the dock ,a french and chinese restarant next to each other, they often dont serve after 9 at night though !
there is a tour office also near the dock, can go visit, pearl falms, vanilla plantations, botanical gardens , or simply tour the island !sometimes it is possable to have a night time trip to a motu, where a polynesian family cook you a feast ,all cooked underground ,and finish with a polynesion dance ,where they try and include you to dance and play instaments with them !
at christmas time,we raised some money for the orphans of raitea ,and also brought them on the ship to meet father christmas , many of these children had learning difficulties and was a very moving experience ,and they definatley enjoyed father christmas- who happend to be extremly hot in his full suit, and he couldnt speak french ,but hey !
we jired a small boat with a group of friends and a few beers and went sailing to a motu at sunset, even had time before... more travel advice
