After stumbling upon this site and reading a handful of "Chicken Little" warnings regarding Los Angeles and the level of safety one can expect when visiting this city, I felt compelled to offer my opinion...I grew up in the midwest, moved to LA seven years ago from Arizona, have lived in Hollywood, the west side, Venice Beach, and West Hollywood...And I've visited just about every area around LA County and I must say this: Out of all the potential threats that exist in this metropolis, there are two that warrant concern...1) The LAPD might be understaffed and poorly trained, but the bottom line is they are notorious for over-reacting, behaving unprofessionally and discriminating against minorities. The LA County Sheriff''s Dept seem to be less confrontational, but barely. Because I work at night in Hollywood, you'd think watching my back for muggers, etc, would be a priority. Ironically, it's the cops that make me the most nervous. And I'm a law abiding citizen. 2) Every threat of violence -- whether implied or voiced -- during my time in LA has come from a fellow driver...From being flipped the bird, to being run off the road, to being threated w/ gun-to-the-head gestures as well as one driver showing me his gun, the most dangerous people in this town are road-ragers. (see: "Crash") And just because you haven't done anything (cutting another off, etc) doesn't matter...Because of the congestion and freeways, ordinary people often turn into homicidal maniacs behind the wheel and don't hesitate to let you know how far they'll take things...
