An Italian Must See... Capri

by E_R_I_C - last update: Aug 28, 2006

Just a short boat ride from Naples

Standing after a cool rain in Anacapri
Just 20 miles off the coast from Naples lies the beautiful little island of Capri. Rocky and majestic, Capri draws many visitors. With just one visit, you will see why. So of course, the island is packed with daytrippers throughout the summer. If you're looking for tranquility, come in the spring or fall (or in winter, if you don't mind visiting a tourist paradise when many of the hotels are closed).

Capri's natural and manmade attractions are indisputable. The island abounds in hills, cliffs, olive groves, vineyards, and garden terraces overlooking the blue water of the Mediterranean. Naples and Vesuvius loom in the distance, with white ferries and hydrofoils zigzagging across the bay. Paths and steps offer countless opportunities to explore the island on foot, while churches, historic villas, and a ruin or two offer sightseeing opportunities for the ambitious tourist.

Two Cities, I mean, Two Towns

Capri is made up of two urban areas called Capri, which is on the lower level of the island, and Anacapri, which rises up much higher on the hillside. They both very interesting and from Anacapri, you can take a ski lift to the very top of the mountain. My only regret is that, even though I went to the island twice, I never went down and took a boat tour of the Blue Grotto. I could kick myself. But, I was young and hopefully... I will be able to visit once again in my lifetime. If I had a tip, it would be to make sure you get a look at the Blue Grotto. I wil have to see if other VT'ers liked it.
