I realize that this is a vague title, but Montmarte has so many streets winding through its neighborhood that you must venture beyond the Sacré Coeur. By all means, do visit this grand cathedral, since it is absolutely amazing, inside and out. But after you've gazed out on the city and sat upon the steps for a while to catch your thoughts, spend the afternoon viewing the art, cafes, and possibly the moulin rouge area. Do be careful if you plan to roam the streets at night though. They can get a little seedy if you wander onto the wrong one. Even though the Sacré Coeur area gets very crowded, there are many other streets that aren't nearly as busy. I suggest taking a stroll through all the foreign markets in the area as well. Depending on the time of year, they will probably be crowded. So how do you avoid the crowds in Paris? Actually, I don't think they ever go away. I've visited in December and March, and both times were still a little busy. I can't imagine what the summer would be like. I suppose I will find out sometime!

Eiffel Tower: Night visit to the Tower

I haven't been up in the tower during the day, which I will do someday. At night you can get some great photos and get a good view of the City of Lights. Also, the lines may be a bit shorter at night. I didn't pay close attention, but early morning seems to be the time for the shortest lines, if that's what you are looking for. The blinking lights at night offer some great photo opportunities though, especially if you have a night shot capability on your camera.

There's not much historical quick information that I can add to the comments already posted by dozens of people on VT. But... I'll go ahead and add some of the same info again. It was created as a royal palace and served many functions over the past 600 years, including a prison during the French Revolution, where more than 2,700 people, including Danton, Saint-Just and Marie-Antoinette, were held here before being beheaded! The Coniergerie is an absolute must see, just for the architectural and the historical aspects. I believe the entrance fee was about 6 euros per adult when I visited in 2005. I didn't go inside during my first visit to Paris, but I would recommend everyone to stop by if you have a few minutes to spare.
