Family Travels

by Florida999 - last update: Aug 28, 2009

On top of a mountain in Austria
We like to travel and our goal is to visit all 50 U.S. States, plus some other places around the world.

I am still way behind on adding to my travel pages!! We went to West Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania for a 2 week camping trip in July and had a fabulous vacation.
Already have the next trip planned , going back to Vermont for Christmas.
AND already planning the trip next summer: if it works out we are going back to Europe to visit London and Rome. I hate flying so this will be a challenge for me.

We still have 6 States left to visit: Alaska, Hawaii, Utah, Oklahoma, Washington, Oregon. We also have visited many High Points in States and a few countries. Including Mount Katahdin in Maine which was the hardest one we have climbed so far, but also the most fun. Just made it up Mount Rogers in Virginia, easy but beautiful hike with lots of wild ponies around.

Most of the time we drive and camp somewhere. It is a lot more fun to camp than stay in a hotel , especially for the kids. If you drive, you see more and can stop along the way anytime you like.
Plus, you can take all of your camping equipment or ski stuff. We drove an amazing 8000 miles during our 3 week trip in July 2006 to Yellowstone, about 6000 miles in July 2007 all the way to Nova Scotia, and about 4000 to Vermont and back. In the winter, we like to rent cabins or houses.

So far my favorite States are:

Lol, I keep changing my mind:
MAINE:-) AND North Carolina!!
Vermont
Florida
Colorado/Wyoming

My least favorite States I won't mention here, but there are a few I don't care for.

Favorite cities:
Large: Chicago
Medium: Portland Maine, Colorado Springs, Orlando?! ( hmmm...getting tired of Orlando)
Small: Bar Harbor ( Maine), Jackson Hole (WY)
Really small: Stowe, Vermont, Beech Mountain ( NC) and Ormond Beach ( FL), Bethel (ME)

Outside the U.S. we have visited the U.K. (mostly Scotland), Canada ,Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. We just went to Mexico on a cruise this year and are planning on more of Europe next year.
I have been to most of Europe and would like to go to a new place, but my family has other plans. They want to visit Italy.

Other places we would like to visit: India, Greece, China, Australia.
My favorite thing to do on a trip: climb up mountains and be outside in nature somewhere doing something fun, like rock climbing or riding, skiing in the winter.
First plane trip

Canary Islands: My first ever trip !

I went to the Canary Islands with my parents. The islands are off the west coast off Africa. I don't remember much about that trip, but I have a few very old looking photos.

Las Palmas

The main city on the island we stayed at.
GMC Sierra

My truck

I felt a little sad "retiring" the Suburban, but this new truck did fine on the first long trip, up to Maine. I even drove through a blizzard:)

I picked another GM truck because I like them. I guess I must be the only person left in the universe....but as before: nothing else short of a RV is large enough to fit our camping stuff in, or the skies and snowboards.
Plus, I like driving it:)

Colosseum from the inside was not a priority for me. Basilica San Clemente......Santa Maria Maggiore...Casa Romane......the Forum/Palatine..the Pantheon...just wander the streets and eat gelato. There is so much to find. Enjoy! :-) J
