We set off in pouring rain from Oribec to have a look round Ston. The rain finally ceased so we could enjoy the bus ride along mountains roads. When we arrived Sue suggested we travel on as it looked a really tiny place but we luckily made the best decision and decided to stay. There are not a lot of rooms in the village and the few we tried were full. We asked a girl working in the gift shop if she knew anywhere whereupon she promptly locked the shop and took us down many tiny streets/alleys to her husbands uncle (I think) house which had just been renovated (Croatian style). He could not speak English but showed us the room and then made us Turkish 'like' coffee whilst we communicated with sign language and phrase book, he was a lovely man. I cannot say the same about the coffee - we did not know that this coffee is already heavily sweetened-I hardly take any sugar and Sue takes none!! We later met his wife - see comments under accomodation.
Ston is a wonderful, quiet little place with just a sprinkling of tourists. We were told by a local restaurant owner that after end September there are practically no visitors. Tourists appear to use it as a pit stop on their way through from/to Oribec and Dubrovnik, and also to walk up that famous wall - it was constructed in 1333 and at 5.5 km is the longest foritification in Europe. The hard climb is worth it for the spectacular views over the village, part of the Peljesac peninsula and the salt plains. Ston has produced the highest quality salt for many centuries.
There are numerous walks, get a map from Tourist Office and just explore. In Mali Ston about half hour walk or so is reputedly the best restaurant in Croatia, unfortunately had no time to sample it and forgotten the name but girl at gift shop or Tourist Office will tell you. We walked to Broce, wanted to find the Franciscan Monastery but could not find the footpath, we used the excuse that it was too hot (30 plus degrees) to try very hard.
Marija and Stijepo offer either a fair sized apartment or a room in their home which has been sympathetically renovated.... more travel advice
