@ the Center of Europe | From the Eagles Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) Berchtesgaden |
Bordered by 9 countries, Germany has had a complex and sometimes troubled past; most recently, the World Wars come to mind. Much of the country was devestated, but Germany has certainly rebuilt itself (with help from the Marshall plan) and is now one of the leading economic and industrial countries of the world.
Germany is certainly not the most exotic destination, however the positive aspects of traveling in this country incude: towns and sites are usually clean, it is relatively safe throughout the country, trains and airport function well, autobahn is one of the best road networks of any country- and it's free (for now...), Germany's location in the center of Europe makes it easy to reach destinations in other countries, and oh yes, good fresh beer anywhere you go. |

| | Highlights We lived in Wiesbaden for a few years; Wiesbaden is in the center of Germany, Capitol of the state of Hessen, just West of Frankfurt.
The Highlights I'd recommend if you are planning a trip to the Country include: Bavaria and the Alps - Most dramatically scenic area of the Country, I'll take a trip to Bavaria any time. Rheingau region of the Rhein river - Castles, vinyards, and picturesque towns Mosel river between Trier and Koblenz - For me, even more beautiful than the Rheingau The Black Forest in the south west Towns along the Romantic Road - such as Rothenburg ODT Other great cities like Heidelberg, Munich, Berlin, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Koln... |
Making your way around When traveling the country, you are probably in for less of an adventure than most other places... The public transit systems are generally top notch and easy to understand as are the road signs. Though you'll need to have a general idea of the geography and layout of the country and area you are in. As with most European countries, you’re road sign will say A9 Nurnberg / A9 Munchen, not A9 North / A9 South.
Also, as you speak English (or at least read it…) a large percentage of the German population has at least a general understanding of the language, even if they are often shy and not willing to admit it... This is of course a huge bonus, particularly since I consider the German language a difficult one to learn, and almost impossible to perfect (Many Germans have told me this). Still, a good philosophy is that wherever you are, you should make an effort to learn at least a few words in the native tongue, the locals will usually appreciate it.
I'd like to put together some pages specific to regions like the Rheingau, Wiesbaden, Mainz... when time permits. For now, I'll post some info on the "tips" pages.
