| | A more rugged, less traveled Tuscany? Umbria is smack dab in the middle of the boot; the only region without a boarder on the sea or another country, it is often referred to as "the green heart of Italy".
If neighboring Toscana has been somewhat spoiled by tourism (certainly some areas), Umbria holds a more "off the beaten path feel". The one big exception being St. Francis' hometown of Assisi. |
tis Assisi.. that brings many a tourist... to Umbria. Assisi is a must on many tours through Italy, and for good reason. I've heard a few complaints about the town being overtouristed. I disagree; Assisi is large enough to duck down an ally and get away from the crowds and commercialism. Stick around in the evening when the day crowds thin out and you'll see a charming medieval hill-town. | | | Assisi from S.M. Degli Angeli |
