S.F. Diversity: A very liberal city

San Francisco is probably one of the most liberal cities in the world. As such, the city encourages all sort of diversity - everything from racial diversity to diversity of sexual orientation and political beliefs. Thus, as tourists of San Francisco, it's important that you are knowledgeable of that fact! Basically, most anything goes in San Francisco. And, that's one of the best parts about this city!

The saying goes that, "Only thugs and bikers call it "Frisco." Whatever the case may be, most native San Franciscans find this nickname very degrading. Thus, when someone refers to the city as "Frisco," people immediately know that person is a tourist. Please just call it San Francisco or the City and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble!

People: The word "hella"
Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet] |
Many native San Franciscans, especially those in their teens or '20s, say the word "hella" in their day-to-day conversations. This word means "a lot" or "very" - for example, "I am hella hungry" means "I am very hungry." This word is definitely local slang, and not everyone uses it (I don't, for example). You will also find some people will substitute "hella" for "hecka."

Protests: Protests and Parades
Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet] |

As the land of the liberal, San Francisco has many protests and parades throughout the year. These almost always affect traffic in some way. Most protests and parades go through the heart of downtown, which can provide either interest/amusement or annoyance to the traveler. Just be prepared for these, watch the local news, and avoid the routes (they usually end in the early afternoon). Hopefully these protests/parades will not detract from your San Francisco experience.

Tipping: Tipping in the US
Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet] |
This is for those travelers from outside the US, as tipping is pretty similar across all the major cities in the United States. Tipping in restaurants usually runs from 10-20 percent. 10 percent denotes unhappiness with the service, 15% is the norm for regular service, and 20% and up is for great, unordinary service. Bellhops are usually given $1 per bag for their help with luggage. Cabs/taxis - 10% -15% is adequate.
