Getting TO/AROUND: We didn't fly to Marco Polo airport. We flew to Venice Treviso airport via Ryanair from Stansted arriving at 2200. Unfortunately the only Italy guide book I had was Rick Steves who doesn't mention that other (mainland) Venice airport (Treviso), in fact he doesn't mention the name of the airport at all (I may be writing him a note!!). Fortunately, in the process of looking at other information, I discovered that Treviso is about an hour north of Venice. Fortunately also, there is a bus that runs to Piazz le Roma (the bus station in Venice). So, our flight was on time, and they didn't lose any of our bags, the bus ran to schedule, and the water buses were also still running.

Getting TO/AROUND: We (DEB's family) decided to ride the bus for the length of the Grand canal. I bought a 72 hour water bus pass (which I was never asked to see in any of the 72 hours) and we boarded the #1 bus/boat and rode slowly up the canal to the train station. We sat up front and gawked at all of Venice for about 30 minutes. After we got to the train station, we walked (via Mc D's - yuck) to the Ca D'Oro bus stop, where we rode the boat one stop to Ponte di Rialto (the bridge with all the shops on it in Venice).

In 2008, I (Barb's son) did the same with my grandmother - we went all the way from the train station down to the Lido and back. It took about 2 hours altogether.

Getting TO/AROUND: There were a lot of nice boats to look at in Venice. I'd rather look at boats than buildings. My mom (Barb) told my grandmother that I wanted to ride in a gondola. I don't remember saying that, and it was so expensive that we didn't do it. But I WOULD have liked to ride in one of the little motor boats which grandma said were water taxis. I didn't tell my grandmother that until we were ready to go to the airport, which we could have done by water taxi. But we had to take an extremely early flight, and not only would the water taxi have taken longer than a regular taxi, but it would cost around €100 which is way too expensive.

Getting TO/AROUND: My grandmother took me to Venice on a cruise ship. We were on the NCL Jade. You might not think of a big ship as a way to get to Venice, but there are a lot of ships that come to Venice. Of course they don't come right in the Grand Canal - even if there weren't bridges it would be too narrow and shallow.

Getting TO/AROUND: For some reason my grandmother had us flying from Venice to Madrid so early that it was dark when we left the hotel. I was sleeping in my clothes because I didn't want to unpack my bag. I went down first with my luggage and my grandmother's carryon - we wouldn't both fit in the elevator with the luggage. The hotel breakfast area wasn't open yet. Actually when we got to the airport it was too early even to check in.

We flew business class (which is not a big deal to me as my mom flies with us all the time, but here when we checked in we were told that we could go and wait in the Marco Polo lounge.

The Marco Polo lounge had a TV with the news (in Italian of course, But the main thing was that they had stuff to eat. I got some orange juice and a roll.

Flying out we went right over Venice. In business class, they also gave us breakfast. I ate some and gave some to my grandmother.
