Pimai is located in the Northeatern Province of Nackon Ratchasima. The town is small but at the heart of it stands Pimai Historical Park, home to one of Thailands finest surviving Khmer Temple complexes, reminiscent of Cambodias Angkor Wat.
It has been said that this marvelous shrine which stands 28 meters tall was the model for the Angkor Wat built a 100 years or so later. Although smaller and less significant than its more famouse cousin it does share numerous design features.
A Hindu-Mahayana Buddist Temple and founded by Khmer King Jayavarman V during the 10th Century but eventually completed by King Suriyavarman I in the early 11th Century.
The temple was still under some reconstruction at this time by the Fine Arts Department making only small areas of the complex inaccessible for safety reasons, otherwise the majority of the temple could be viewed throughout. |
