The Dominican Republic

About the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is an amazing country with fantastic weather, friendly people & breathtaking scenery! It's a 'get away from it all' holiday - you can relax, but there's also a variety of excursions you can go on if you want to up the pace a bit.

The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean's most diverse and fascinating countries, and has a reputation for having some of the friendliest people in the whole of the Caribbean. Most Dominicans speak Spanish and you'll find strong African and American influences which help create a unique place to visit. The country occupies two thirds of the island of Hispaniola and has a northern coast that looks out across the Atlantic and south easterly shores that are lapped by the Caribbean Sea. In the Dominican Republic the hurricane season generally runs from June-November.
Idyllic

Where to stay

Like all holiday destinations, accomodation is available to suit a variety of budgets. Most hotels in the Dominican Republic are all inclusive. We stayed in a 3* & loved every minute of it - we found the price extremely reasonable considering it would have cost us as much to go to Spain once we'd paid for our meals & everything - & I know where I'd prefer to go on holiday...especially now I've been to the Dominican Republic.

Some of the most popular places to stay are:

Costa Dorada - Set against the backdrop of Mount Isabella de Torro, Costa Dorada is just 750m from the resort of Playa Dorada. If you like golden sandy beaches, this is an ideal place to visit - it has a beach which stretches for over 2 and a half miles before merging into Playa Dorada. There's a wide choice of hotels to choose from within this area & lots of them provide entertainment through to day and into the evening.

Playa Dorada literally means 'golden beach' - which is something than probably springs to mind when you think of the Dominican Republic! Playa Dorada is a purpose resort which is built around a championship 18 hole golf course - and also has a number of bars & restaurants, clubs & discos and a casino which I visited on an excursion from Cabarete.

Cabarete is the resort I stayed at, and although our hotel was situated about 5-10 minutes from the centre, we still found it a lovely place to stay and visit. It's famous as a windsurfers' paradise, hosting windsurfing events throughout the year and is rated as one of the top places to windsurf in the world! It's the perfect place to relax - but don't expect calm seas.....you'll get quite a workout trying to avoid drowning, lol. If you do go into Cabarete of an evening, you can sample the liveliest nightlife on the coast; from merengue and live bands to European sounds.

Sosua is near Cabarete, and has a gorgeous beach that is full of bars and cafes along it's half mile long stretch. There's a stunning bay that seperates Sosua from neighbouring resorts, and as it's protected by a coral reef, it's ideal if you want to find some of the clearest and calmest waters throughout the country! is protected by a coral reef with some of the clearest water on the island. Sosua is perfect for a relaxing beach holiday.
About to go Quad Biking!

What to do

There's a wide range of excursions available, from jeep safaris, trips to stunning waterfalls, trips to hidden islands or excursions that just take you from one resort to another, there's plenty to do in the Domican Republic.

See my tips for detailed reviews of the many excursions available.

You obviously had a great time in Dominican Republic. I do not know this area but from my experience in Northern Africa, I can understand your warnings about both tipping and giving things to children!

Lovely page on Dominican Republic. Sounds as you had great fun there! I've always thought that all inclusive holidays are not for me but maybe I should give them a try. Smiles, Sini

Sounds like you had a great time. Not sure I would enjoy German cuisine though. What did you get? A big sausage?
